Overview
Gene identification is the process of locating genes within genomic sequence and determining which genes, variants, or transcripts are associated with a particular trait, phenotype, or disease. It includes computational gene prediction, in which coding regions, regulatory elements, and gene boundaries are inferred from sequence features, as well as experimental and statistical approaches that link genes to function. In biomedical research, gene identification underpins the discovery of disease-associated loci and candidate therapeutic targets, and it supports the development of diagnostic markers. The task is increasingly data-driven, drawing on high-throughput sequencing, transcriptomic and proteomic profiling, and mass-spectrometry datasets, where feature-selection and feature-weighting methods help identify the molecular signatures that discriminate disease states, as in the analysis of cancer-related profiles. Within a systems-biology framework, identified genes are interpreted not in isolation but as nodes in interaction and regulatory networks, allowing their roles to be understood in the context of pathways and cellular processes. Bioinformatic resources and immunogenomic and proteomic-genomic techniques extend identification from single genes toward integrated characterisation of genotype, expression, and function, with applications spanning microbial strain typing, cancer diagnostics, and personalised medicine. By connecting sequence to biological role, gene identification provides a foundation for functional annotation, mechanistic study, and the translation of genomic information into clinical and biotechnological applications.
